NIS boss suspends Seme Border commanders over extortion allegations

Kemi Nandap, the comptroller-general of the Nigeria Immigration Service has ordered the suspension of commanding officers along the Lagos-Seme border corridor following allegations of extortion by personnel.

The decision comes in response to viral online reports accusing immigration officers of harassing and extorting travellers along the busy route linking Nigeria to the Republic of Benin.

Nandap also directed an immediate investigation into the claims, signalling a firm stance against misconduct within the service.

In a statement issued by Akinsola Akinlabi, the service’s public relations officer the comptroller-general condemned the alleged actions, stressing that they run contrary to the agency’s standards.

She said the Service “unequivocally condemns the actions depicted in these reports, as such conduct is unacceptable and stands in direct violation of the core values, ethics, and operational standards of the Service.”

While the number of affected officers and specific commands were not disclosed, the Service said the probe would identify “all officers involved” to ensure that “appropriate disciplinary measures are applied with immediate effect.”

The Lagos-Seme corridor remains one of West Africa’s most strategic and heavily trafficked borders, handling significant volumes of goods, traders and travellers daily. However, it has long been plagued by complaints of harassment and extortion by security operatives.

The latest allegations, amplified by circulating videos, have once again drawn public attention to the conduct of officials stationed at the border.

Reaffirming its commitment to accountability, the Service said it would not tolerate any behaviour that undermines public confidence.

It stated that it is committed to “professional, transparent, and efficient services at all points of entry and exit,” adding that it “will not condone any act that undermines public trust or tarnishes the integrity of the Service.”

“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains resolute in its mission to serve with integrity, discipline, and professionalism while facilitating lawful migration,” the statement added.

The agency urged members of the public to report cases of misconduct through its official communication channels, including its verified social media platforms and dedicated contact lines.
