NiMet Issues Fresh Flood Alert To Some Nigerian States [Full List]

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has warned residents of Lagos and other coastal states to prepare for a heightened risk of flash flooding on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, following forecasts of sustained and widespread rainfall across southern Nigeria.

The warning was contained in NiMet’s Tuesday Weather Outlook, which predicted thunderstorms and varying intensities of rainfall across several parts of the country.

According to the agency, continuous rainfall could trigger flash floods in low-lying and coastal communities, particularly in Lagos and other states along Nigeria’s southern coastline.

For the morning period, NiMet forecast thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.

The agency said the weather conditions are expected to worsen later in the day, with moderate rainfall forecast across the entire southern region.

“Southern States: Wet Morning, Heavy Rain Later. Morning: Thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall are expected over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.

“Afternoon/Evening: Moderate rainfall is expected across the entire Southern region, with a high likelihood of flash flooding in coastal areas, especially Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states,” the agency stated.

In the northern part of the country, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall over parts of Borno, Adamawa and Taraba states.

Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected to extend to parts of Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Yobe, Gombe and Kebbi states.

The agency urged residents in the affected areas to closely monitor weather conditions and remain vigilant as rainfall intensifies.

Across the North-Central region, NiMet forecast predominantly cloudy skies during the morning, with chances of thunderstorms and light rainfall over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa and Benue states.

It added that thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected across the region during the afternoon and evening hours.

NiMet advised residents nationwide to exercise caution, warning that strong winds could precede thunderstorms and pose additional hazards.

Motorists were urged to drive carefully during rainfall and periods of reduced visibility, while residents were cautioned against driving or walking through floodwaters due to the risk of being swept away.

The agency also advised people to avoid taking shelter under tall trees during thunderstorms because of the danger of lightning strikes.

For the aviation sector, NiMet urged airline operators and other stakeholders to obtain airport-specific weather reports to support safe flight planning and operations.

The agency noted that strict adherence to weather advisories and safety precautions would help reduce the risks associated with severe weather conditions.
