Nigeria’s Unity Is Sacrosanct’ — Rep seeks end to Ijaw-Benin dispute

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Omosede Igbinedion, has appealed for peace between the Ijaw and Benin communities in Edo State.

Her appeal follows growing tension over the ownership of Gelegelegbene, an oil-producing community in Ovia North East Local Government Area. The disagreement has led to claims and counterclaims between both ethnic groups and has raised fears of possible violence.

Speaking on the issue, Igbinedion urged both communities to remain peaceful and avoid actions that could cause conflict. She stressed that unity and peaceful coexistence are more important than ethnic differences.

The lawmaker said she is waiting for Governor Monday Okpebholo to address the situation in Gelegele.

According to her, the governor does not believe the matter has become a major problem, but some individuals are trying to create tension that could escalate.

“I want us to always choose peace and unity,” she said. “I am not tribalistic because I come from a mixed background. I believe the unity of Nigeria is very important, and we must all continue to live together in peace.”

She called on residents of both communities to remain calm and work together to prevent the dispute from turning into violence.

She added that dialogue and mutual understanding remain the best way to resolve disagreements and protect lives and property.
