Nigerian Govt moves to decriminalize attempted su!cide

The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated steps to decriminalise attempted suicide following approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) supporting the position presented by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, disclosed the executive resolution in Abuja during events commemorating World Suicide Prevention Day.
 

Speaking through the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Daju Kachollom S., Salako confirmed that the legislative framework has been transmitted to the National Assembly for formal statutory review and enactment.

Highlighting the medical and societal necessity of the policy shift, the minister stated that penalizing individuals undergoing acute psychological distress impairs access to clinical treatment.

“A person experiencing a mental health crisis should be met with care, support and appropriate intervention, rather than punishment,” Salako said. “Removing the fear of criminal sanctions can help reduce stigma, encourage help-seeking and create greater opportunities for timely intervention.”
 

Salako emphasized that statutory decriminalization represents one component of a broader public health strategy requiring ongoing structural investment in mental healthcare infrastructure and community awareness.

“We must continue to strengthen mental health services, expand access to quality care, promote early identification and intervention, support persons with lived experience, empower communities and foster open conversations that replace fear and discrimination with empathy and hope,” he added.
