NHRC records 276 rights violations in Adamawa

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Adamawa office, has recorded 276 human rights violations from January to June, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Grace Mamza, the NHRC state Coordinator, made this known to NAN in Yola on Wednesday.

She stated that of the 276 cases received, 84 were solved, 12 were still pending, nine were referred to the appropriate authorities, and the remaining ones are ongoing.

Mamza listed the nature of complaints to include right to inheritance, forced Marriage, abandonment of Family, threat to Life, Domestic Violence and Unlawful Arrest and Detention.

Others are non-payment of Benefits and entitlement, defilement, right to Health, access to children, inhuman and degrading treatment, Right to Dignity of Human Person and Right to Fair Hearing, among others.

According to her, as part of their efforts to reduce such cases in the state, the commission embarked on sensitisation and awareness-raising in schools, communities and worship centres.

“The general public is advised to treat one another with dignity and respect not just because the law says so but because humanity demands it,” the state coordinator said.

She, however, called on those whose rights were violated to report the matter to the commission for redress and not to take the law into their hands.
