Nashville Governor Breaks Silence After Dolly Parton Fans Started A Petition
Dolly Parton‘s name could soon be attached to one of Tennessee’s biggest gateways after her death.
On August 28, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced plans to honor the late country icon by renaming Nashville International Airport after her. The proposal comes days after fans pushed the idea through a petition that attracted more than 120,000 verified supporters.
Dolly Parton died at 80 on August 25, leaving behind a legacy that stretches far beyond music. Her philanthropy, literacy work, connection to Tennessee and decades of cultural influence have now inspired several efforts to preserve her name.
Governor Lee and Nashville International Airport announced their intent to name the airport in Parton’s honor on August 28. Lee had spoken with Parton’s team earlier that week about the proposal, and her representatives expressed appreciation for the support surrounding the idea.
The team also said they were touched by the proposal and open to continuing the conversation. They noted that the tribute could reflect the way Parton brought people together for good throughout her life. The governor said the singer’s life was “forever woven into the fabric” of Tennessee. In his words:
“It is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness.”
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority also backed the vision, emphasizing Parton’s message of dignity, kindness, and opportunity. The airport authority said travelers should receive the same welcome regardless of their background or socioeconomic status.
Parton was born in Sevier County and became one of the most influential figures in American music. Her impact also reached philanthropy through the Dollywood Foundation and Imagination Library, which has gifted nearly 200 million books across several countries.
The proposed renaming will now face an official step before becoming reality. According to the Nashville International Airport report, the Metro Nashville Airport Authority’s naming policy and Lee’s proposal are scheduled to be addressed at its September 17 meeting.
Fans Started The Airport Campaign Before Her Death

Lydia Popovich and Dan Dion created the petition in January 2025, arguing that Parton’s influence on Tennessee deserved a landmark as significant as Nashville International Airport. The petition highlighted her music, philanthropy, and Imagination Library.
When the campaign was created, the literacy program had already gifted more than 100 million books to children. After Parton died on August 25, the petition experienced a huge surge in attention.
Organizers said tens of thousands of people visited and signed it after her passing, describing the renewed support as a way to keep her “light and magic” alive.
The petition has since passed 120,000 verified supporters. Supporters also gave the campaign a playful Nashville-style slogan. “We could all be Departin’ from Parton!” appears among the petition’s calls for support.
The campaign has therefore grown from a fan idea into a serious public proposal. Its supporters believe attaching Parton’s name to the airport would honor a Tennessee legend whose influence reached far beyond entertainment, as shared by The Blast.
Tennessee Leaders Joined The Dolly Parton Movement
5The airport campaign reached Tennessee lawmakers. State Senator Todd Warner has pledged to introduce legislation supporting the proposed name change.
Nashville City Councilor Russ Bradford also backed the idea. However, he clarified that Metro Council can only express support, while the final decision rests with the Metro Nashville Airport Authority.
The issue has also reached lawmakers preparing for the next legislative session. Tennessee House Deputy Speaker Jason Zachary said discussions had already begun about how to honor someone whose impact was difficult to match.
He suggested that Parton’s legacy deserved something larger than a statue or bust. The late singer’s ability to cross political and cultural lines has also shaped the response.
Representative John Ray Clemmons said Republicans and Democrats planned to work together on a tribute because Parton “was not a divisive figure.”
Dollywood also confirmed that the theme park would remain open on Wednesday. The decision followed Parton’s wishes that “the show must go on.” The Empire State Building lit its tower pink for one hour on August 25, beginning at 9:25 p.m, in honor of the late legend.
The Icon’s Name Exists In Unexpected Places
5Parton’s legacy has already been attached to several unusual namesakes. The most famous example may be Dolly the sheep, the first mammal cloned from an adult somatic cell. Scientists at Scotland’s Roslin Institute created the sheep in 1996 and introduced her to the world the following year.
Lead scientist Ian Wilmut later explained that the animal was named Dolly because the cloned cell came from a mammary gland. The country musician’s team was reportedly informed before the name became public. Her manager responded with the line, “There is no such thing as baaaaaad publicity.”
Parton later said in a 2024 interview that she was flattered by the reference. Dolly the sheep eventually produced six healthy lambs before being euthanized in 2003 after developing an incurable illness. Her name was also given to a lichen species discovered by scientists from the New York Botanical Garden.
Japewiella dollypartoniana was named after her because of her connection to the southern Appalachian region and conservation efforts in her community.
In 2020, geologist Greg Retallack discovered fossilized moss and other plant material in Tennessee near Dollywood. The fossil’s location helped inspire the name Dollyphyton buocotii. A hybrid orange-red tea rose also carries Parton’s name.
Breeder Joe Winchel created it in 1984 by cross-pollinating the Oklahoma and Fragrant Cloud varieties. He said its color, large blooms, fragrance, and form reminded him of Parton. The Blast revealed that the late singer gave her blessing to the rose’s name, although yellow roses were reportedly her favorite.

She donated $1 million to vaccine research, with surgeon and friend Dr. Naji Abumrad crediting her funding with helping accelerate the science behind the Moderna vaccine.
Stella also remembered their close relationship. The sisters had a Tuesday morning tradition of drinking coffee together over the phone before sunrise, a routine connected to their childhood as “little farm girls” in Tennessee.
The Blast revealed that the last singer’s sister said those mornings would never be the same, but Dolly’s “love, respect and goodness will remain.”
