Nancy Guthrie Update Today: Savannah Guthrie Unveils New NBC Show

Savannah Guthrie has announced she will host a new television version of the popular word puzzle game Wordle, as the search continues for her missing mother. The Today show anchor appeared on NBC on Monday alongside Jimmy Fallon, who revealed that the New York Times-owned game would be adapted into a game show after more than two years in development.

“We’ve been developing Wordle as a game show for the past two-and-a-half years with The New York Times. And it’s official,” Fallon said on air. “We are making Wordle game show with our host, Savannah Guthrie!” he added, according to TV Insider.

The new programme is based on the online word-guessing game Wordle, which became a global phenomenon after its launch in 2022.

Fallon, who is serving as executive producer, described the format as accessible to viewers of all ages. “Everyone can play, and it’s not like a trivia game where you have to know all these things and facts. It’s like, you’re just trying to guess a word,” he said.

Guthrie said the show would be “super-fast-paced and fun”, adding that it was designed to appeal to families. “I love a game and a show that you can watch with your kids, and it’s fun, and you feel like they’re learning something,” she said.

Fallon said producers believed Guthrie was the ideal presenter for the programme.

“We were looking, and we were like, ‘Who’s the perfect host for this? We need to have someone that looks like they play Wordle, someone that knows how to run a show and host it,'” he said. “And we did the pilot and you are amazing by the way.”

He added that “200 crew and cast” members had agreed the show could not move forward without her.

The announcement comes as Guthrie continues to deal with the disappearance of her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie. Nancy Guthrie was reported missing from her home in Tucson on 1 February. Authorities have not publicly identified a suspect, and the investigation remains ongoing.

According to Page Six, plans for the Wordle show were delayed after filming was originally scheduled to begin in March. Guthrie reportedly stepped away from the Today show for two months following her mother’s disappearance before returning last month.

During Monday’s broadcast, Guthrie thanked NBC and the production team for postponing work on the programme while she dealt with the crisis.

“When everything happened with me and my family, they just stopped everything and said, ‘We’ll wait for you,'” she said. “And Hollywood is a really tough business, as you know, and I didn’t expect that. And I just want to say thank you. It means so much to me.”

Ahead of Mother’s Day, Guthrie shared a message on Instagram dedicated to her missing mother. “We miss you with every breath. We will never stop looking for you. We will never be at peace until we find you,” she wrote.

Her husband, Michael Feldman, also posted a tribute online, describing Guthrie as “the strongest person”. On Monday’s programme, Guthrie wore yellow, a colour she has previously associated with hope and remembrance during the search for her mother.
