N868m fraud: Court sentences ex-AGF, Nwabuoku, to 72 years in prison

The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted and sentenced former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, to 72 years in prison over a fraud case involving N868.46 million.

Nwabuoku was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges related to money laundering.

In a statement shared on its official X handle on Monday, the EFCC described the conviction as a major milestone in its ongoing efforts to promote accountability and curb financial crimes within the public sector.

“The former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, who was prosecuted by the EFCC at the Federal High Court, Abuja, for money laundering involving N868.46 million has been convicted and sentenced to jail for 72 years,” EFCC wrote.

The anti-graft agency explained that the offences involved the diversion and concealment of public funds exceeding N868 million.

The court reached its verdict after reviewing evidence presented by the prosecution, which outlined how the funds were allegedly laundered through a series of transactions.

The 72-year sentence represents the cumulative penalties for the multiple counts on which he was found guilty.

Nwabuoku had briefly served as Acting Accountant-General of the Federation before being removed from office following corruption allegations.
