My Brother Died In A Military Plane Crash; My Dad Didn’t Want Me In The Army So I Chose Music -D’banj

Music icon D’banj has revealed that his original career aspiration was to be a soldier, not a musician. He disclosed that he was born in Zaria to military parents and attended the Nigerian Military School (NMS) with the intention of proceeding to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).

Speaking on the MIC ON PODCAST, D’banj explained that his path changed tragically after his elder brother, who was in the NDA, died in one of Nigeria’s first military plane crashes. Following this loss, his father forbade any other children from joining the military, which led him to switch from a military path to music.

D’banj said: “To be D’banj is the grace of God. Born in Zaria to military parents, the discipline has always been there. In fact, I wanted to be in the army. I went to NMS. So I really wanted to join the army. So I wanted to do NMS then NDA because we were living in Kaduna around that time. My father was in Jaji Command and Staff College. And along the way, I lost my elder brother who was in the NDA. He died in one of the first plane crashes, I think in Nigeria. And then my dad didn’t want anybody to go into the military anymore, and that’s when I switched from military to music. So both of them carry something. From military to music.
