Mental illness or political poison? Disturbing story behind DonaldTrump assassination attempt

The recent shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington has shaken America once again. President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance had to be quickly moved out after gunshots were fired near the ballroom. The man who carried out this dangerous attack has now been identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, a part-time teacher and engineer from Torrance, California. As more information comes out, people are asking one big question — what really pushed this educated young man to take such an extreme step?

Anger Against Trump’s Government

According to investigators, the biggest reason behind the attack was Allen’s deep political anger against President Trump and his team. Just a few minutes before the shooting, Allen sent a written note (called a “manifesto”) to his family members. In this note, he clearly said he wanted to target officials from Trump’s administration. He even called Trump a “traitor”, a “rapist” and a “paedophile” (a person sexually attracted to children) — though he did not write Trump’s name directly. Trump himself has strongly rejected these accusations, calling them baseless and saying he has been completely cleared of all such charges.

Slowly Becoming Radicalised

Trump told CBS News that after reading the manifesto, he believes Allen had become “radicalised” — meaning he had slowly developed extreme views. According to his sister, who spoke to police, Allen had started getting involved in left-wing activism in Los Angeles. He began making radical statements, bought firearms, and started practicing regularly at a shooting range. What began as angry words slowly turned into a dangerous plan of action.

Change In Religious Beliefs

Another reason mentioned was a big shift in his personal beliefs. Trump said Allen was earlier a Christian believer but later turned strongly against Christianity. Authorities also found anti-Christian and anti-Trump content on his social media accounts. Interestingly, in his own note, Allen tried to defend his attack by twisting religious meaning. He wrote that staying silent when others are oppressed is not real Christian behaviour — it is supporting the wrongdoer. This shows how confused and disturbed his thinking had become.

Family Was Already Worried

One of the saddest parts of this story is that Allen’s own family had noticed his strange behaviour much before the attack. His brother had complained to police earlier, and his sister had also raised serious concerns. Trump said this clearly shows the family knew something was wrong and that Allen may have been mentally unwell. Sadly, the warnings did not stop the attack in time.

Anger Over Detention Camps And Politics

Allen’s note also showed anger about conditions in detention camps in America and other political issues. He had earlier donated 25 dollars to a political fund supporting Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, where he listed himself as a teacher. Slowly, his political frustration appears to have grown into hatred, leading him to plan this dangerous attack on Trump’s officials.

The Attack And Quick Rescue

Allen travelled by train all the way from Los Angeles to Chicago, and then to Washington DC, where he checked into the same hotel where the dinner was being held. Armed with a shotgun, a handgun and knives, he rushed through the security checkpoint and tried to enter the ballroom. Secret Service agents acted quickly, exchanged fire, and brought him down. One officer was injured but was saved by his bulletproof vest.

Trump recalled the scary moment, saying that when agents shouted “get down”, he and Melania quickly lay flat on the floor. He admitted he paused for a second to understand what was happening, but Melania immediately realised it was gunfire and reacted faster than most people around them.

Trump’s Strong Message

Even after such a frightening incident, Trump praised the Secret Service for their quick and brave action. He firmly rejected the wild claims in the manifesto and said the suspect was clearly mentally unwell. He also announced that the dinner should be held again within 30 days, with stronger security, because no single disturbed person should be allowed to stop an event linked to press freedom.

A Sad Reminder For Society

Former President Barack Obama also condemned the attack, saying violence has no place in democracy. The truth is, this incident is not just about one man with a gun. It is a sad reminder of how anger, extreme thinking, and untreated mental health problems can push even an educated person into doing something terrible. Society, families, and the government must work together so that warning signs are never ignored, and such tragedies can be stopped before they happen.
