Medical Expert Who Assessed Nnamdi Kanu Reportedly Arrested

A lawyer, Maxwell Opara, has raised the alarm over the alleged arrest of Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, a medical expert said to have conducted an independent assessment of the health condition of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Naija News reports that Opara claimed that Aghaji was arrested at his residence in Independence Layout, Enugu State, on Friday, July 3, 2026.

In a statement on Saturday, the lawyer said the professor had reportedly issued independent medical reports on Kanu’s health, which allegedly contradicted an earlier report presented by the Department of State Services.

“Information has reached me that Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, the medical expert who reportedly issued independent medical reports on the health condition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was arrested at his residence in Independence Layout, Enugu State, on 3rd July, 2026,” Opara said.

Opara did not disclose the agency responsible for the alleged arrest or whether any charge had been filed against the professor.

He, however, called on professional bodies and civil society organisations to monitor the development and ensure that due process is followed.

“We call on the Nigerian Medical Association, Nigeria Bar Association, Civil Society Group and other relevant authorities to ensure that due process and the rule of law is strictly observed and nobody should be intimidated for speaking the truth,” he stated.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official confirmation of the alleged arrest from the DSS, the Nigeria Police Force or any other security agency.

The reported arrest comes amid continued legal proceedings involving Kanu, whose detention and health condition have remained subjects of public concern and litigation.

According to Sahara Reporters, a previous independent medical report by the Nigerian Medical Association had reportedly raised concerns over Kanu’s health, citing symptoms including fatigue, blurred vision, chest pain, urinary difficulty, recurrent nosebleeds and numbness in the limbs.
