Mateta Fires Crystal Palace To Historic Conference League Title

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the decisive goal as Crystal Palace claimed the first European trophy in the club’s history with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final in Leipzig.

The French forward reacted quickest early in the second half, turning home from close range after Adam Wharton’s effort had been pushed into his path by Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla.

The victory capped a remarkable spell for outgoing Palace manager Oliver Glasner, who leaves Selhurst Park after guiding the club to the FA Cup, Community Shield and now Conference League glory in just two and a half years.

With both sides appearing in their first European final, nerves dominated the opening period at the Red Bull Arena. Chances were limited and clear openings proved difficult to come by.

Alemao dragged an effort wide for Rayo before Unai Lopez sent another attempt past the post as the Spanish side searched for a breakthrough.

Palace nearly went ahead before the halftime break when Wharton delivered an inviting cross into the area, only for Tyrick Mitchell to head wide from close range.

The breakthrough finally arrived six minutes after the restart. Wharton’s low strike forced Batalla into a save, but the rebound fell kindly for Mateta, who made no mistake from a few yards out.

It marked Mateta’s 16th goal of the season for Palace and completed another twist in a campaign that almost saw him leave in January before a knee injury ended a proposed move to AC Milan.

Rayo pushed for a response late in the day. Yeremy Pino rattled both posts with a free-kick and later created another opening for Mateta at the other end, but Batalla produced a sharp stop to keep the score down.

Despite their spirited run to the final, the La Liga side, operating on the division’s smallest budget, could not find a way through as Palace held firm to seal a famous night in Germany.
