Mahama Unveils Rawlings Bust, Names NDC Headquarters After Party Founder

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a bust of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings and officially named the National Democratic Congress headquarters in his honour, in a ceremony marking the birthday commemoration of the party’s founder.

The event, captured in images and videos shows President Mahama pulling back a white cloth to reveal a bronze bust of Rawlings mounted on a dark granite plinth, with a large portrait of the former leader visible in the background.

The naming of the NDC headquarters after Rawlings represents a significant symbolic gesture by the party and its current leader, formally enshrining the founder’s legacy in the physical identity of the institution he created.

Jerry John Rawlings, who founded the NDC and served as Ghana’s Head of State from 1981 to 1993 under the Provisional National Defence Council before transitioning to democratic governance, passed away on November 12, 2020. He remains one of the most consequential and debated figures in Ghana’s political history.

The birthday commemoration activities reflect the NDC’s continued effort to honour Rawlings’ legacy and consolidate the party’s historical identity around its founder’s memory under President Mahama’s current administration.
