Loveworld Nuclear Medicine Academy opens applications for HPCSA-Accredited programme

The Loveworld Nuclear Medicine Academy (LNMA) has opened applications for a 12-week Foundation Certificate Programme in Clinical Nuclear Medicine designed to equip healthcare professionals with specialised knowledge and practical skills in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging.

The hybrid, competency-based programme, presented by UMIT – Molecular Excellence, is targeted at healthcare professionals already working in nuclear medicine as well as those seeking to transition into the field.

According to the Academy, the programme combines structured online learning with faculty-led teaching, mentorship, competency assessments and supervised practical training.

The final week of the programme will involve hands-on practical training at either the Loveworld Medical Centre in Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria, or Umhlanga Molecular Imaging and Therapy in Umhlanga, South Africa.

The Academy said the programme is designed to strengthen participants’ clinical knowledge, technical competencies and patient-centred approach to nuclear medicine practice.

Programme Covers Key Areas

LNMA said participants will receive training across several core areas, including clinical nuclear medicine, radiopharmacy, radiation safety, molecular imaging and theragnostics.

The molecular imaging component will cover key technologies and applications, including Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT).

The programme will also expose participants to theragnostics, an emerging area of personalised medicine that combines diagnostic imaging with targeted therapeutic approaches.

HPCSA Accreditation

According to the Academy, the Foundation Certificate Programme is accredited for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) through the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria.

The programme carries General and Ethics Continuing Education Units (CEUs) at Level 1.

The Academy said its curriculum includes a dedicated four-hour module focusing on the ethical, legal and human-rights dimensions of nuclear medicine and theranostics.

LNMA said the programme adopts a continuous assessment model rather than relying solely on a final examination.

Participants will be assessed through weekly quizzes, timed competency examinations, case presentations and a Foundation completion assessment.

The final assessment will comprise a 100-question written examination, a practical competency assessment and an observed Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)-style workflow assessment.

Participants’ progress will also be tracked throughout the programme through a personal Clinical Skills Passport.

Open to Healthcare Professionals Across Africa

The Academy said applications are open to physicians, nuclear medicine technologists, radiographers, radiopharmacists, pharmacists, medical physicists, nurses, scientists and other related healthcare professionals and trainees.

LNMA also clarified that applicants do not have to reside in Nigeria to participate in the programme.

The Academy said the hybrid structure is designed to provide participants with access to online learning while retaining an important practical component through supervised clinical training.

According to LNMA, the programme is part of its broader focus on strengthening nuclear medicine education, clinical competence, safety and patient-centred practice across Africa and beyond.
