Lawyers charging clients in dollars risk prosecution, EFCC warns

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned that it will prosecute lawyers who charge their clients in foreign currencies.

The Acting Zonal Director of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the EFCC, ACE I Bawa Usman Kaltungo, gave the warning on Friday, September 11, 2026, when he received members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Task Force on Illegal Practice of Law.

The delegation, led by the Head of the task force, Moshood Abiola, visited Kaltungo at his office in Lagos.
Kaltungo expressed concern over the involvement of some legal practitioners in practices he described as illegal and unethical.

He specifically warned lawyers against charging clients in foreign currencies, stressing that the EFCC would take action against anyone found violating the law.
“The Commission would not hesitate to prosecute anyone found culpable,” Kaltungo said.

He urged legal practitioners to carry out their duties in line with the law and professional standards.

The EFCC also assured the NBA task force of its readiness to work with the association to address illegal practices within the legal profession.
