Lagos pensioners’ protest turns chaotic as Police fire tear gas

Pensioners under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Contributory Pension Scheme have protested at the Lagos House in Ikeja, demanding the payment of outstanding pension benefits.

The retirees called on the Lagos State Government to implement approved pension increases and wage awards.

They also demanded the payment of pension arrears and other benefits they said the government owed them.

The pensioners gathered at the government premises to draw attention to issues affecting their welfare and seek the intervention of the state government.

However, the protest was disrupted when police officers reportedly fired tear gas at the retirees, forcing some of them to leave the area.

The action increased tension at the scene, as the pensioners expressed anger over the use of force against them.

The protesters maintained that their demands were focused on the implementation of approved pension increases, payment of outstanding arrears, wage awards and other entitlements.

The pensioners had earlier given the Lagos State Government an August 31 deadline to pay their outstanding pension enhancement and wage award.

They said they were at the Lagos House to press the government to meet its obligations and address the financial difficulties faced by retired workers.
