Labour Party accuses Arabambi of impersonation in suit against Obi

The Labour Party has accused its former chieftain, Abayomi Arabambi of impersonation in the academic records’ suit he filed against Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of African Democratic Congress, ADC.

Arambambi had dragged West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) to court over alleged failure to release academic records of Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party to him.

However, Labour Party said it was forced to react to the suit following reference to Arabambi as a chieftain of the party in report in some mainstream newspapers.

“While the Labour Party wishes to refrain from commenting on the substance or otherwise of the litigant’s case before the court, particularly as Mr. Peter Obi is not a member of the Party, the Labour Party wishes to notify the general public that Abayomi Arabambi is not a member of the Labour Party,” the party said in a statement by Ken Eluma Asogwa, its
National Publicity Secretary.

The party recalled that Arabambi was one of its members suspected by its National Executive Council (NEC) on Wednesday, 18th March 2026, for various infractions bordering on anti-party activities.

The party also said the suspension was subsequently ratified by the National Convention of the Party, the highest decision-making organ of the Labour Party, on 28th April 2026.

The party added that following the ratification, Arabambi and others ceased to be members of the Party as the decision has not been revisited or reversed since then.

Labour Party therefore insisted that Arabambi is not its member and could not have instituted any action in court as its member.

“If Abayomi Arabambi has presented himself to the public as a chieftain or representative of the Labour Party, the general public is hereby notified that such representation is entirely unauthorised and, prima facie, amounts to impersonation,” the party said.

The party added that its lawyers are currently determining the appropriate legal and other steps that may be taken, including a possible petition to the relevant law enforcement authorities over alleged impersonation by Arabambi.

“Finally, the public is hereby notified that this press release is issued solely to clarify the alleged relationship between the litigant and the Labour Party and has no bearing whatsoever on the validity or otherwise of his claims against Mr. Peter Obi before the court.

“The Labour Party nonetheless hopes that this statement has put the matter in its proper perspective and, most importantly, clarified the status of Abayomi Arabambi vis-à-vis the Labour Party,” it said
