Khaled Meshaal pledges support for new Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya

Khaled Meshaal, head of Hamas abroad, has pledged his support for Dr Khalil al-Hayya following his election as head of the movement’s political bureau, calling for unity during what he described as a critical period for the Palestinian people.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Meshaal congratulated al-Hayya on his election by Hamas’ General Shura Council, expressing hope that he would be granted success in leading the movement.

Meshaal said the current circumstances require all efforts to be united in support of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, adding that members of the movement should work together to assist the population and pursue what he described as their national objectives.

He said the internal election was conducted in accordance with Hamas’ regulations and bylaws and reflected the movement’s commitment to institutional procedures and consultation.

The statement also reaffirmed Hamas’ support for Palestinians in the West Bank and Jerusalem, referred to continued opposition to Israeli occupation and settlement activity, and reiterated the movement’s support for Palestinian prisoners.

Meshaal concluded by calling for continued efforts toward what he described as “freedom, resisting the occupation, and achieving our people’s aspirations for liberation, return, and independence.”

Hamas announced on Monday that Khalil al-Hayya had been elected head of its political bureau, succeeding Yahya Sinwar.
