Kenneth Okonkwo Blasts Peter Obi, Says ‘Nigeria Needs a Tolerant Leader, Not One Who Fears Criticism’

Veteran Nollywood actor, lawyer, and politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, has launched another fierce attack on his former political ally, Peter Obi, intensifying the growing rift between the two prominent opposition figures.

Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accused the former Labour Party presidential candidate of being intolerant of criticism and attempting to silence dissenting voices through legal action.

In a statement posted on Wednesday, the outspoken politician claimed that some supporters of Obi had infiltrated his social media platform to monitor his activities and challenge his views. He said the development further reinforced his belief that Obi and some of his supporters are unwilling to accept opposing opinions.

The latest outburst comes amid an ongoing legal dispute between both men following allegations previously made by Okonkwo against Obi regarding alleged electoral misconduct and bribery claims.

‘Obi Cannot Tolerate Criticism’

Reacting to reports that Peter Obi had initiated legal proceedings against him and other public commentators, including activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju, Okonkwo argued that such actions contradict democratic principles and freedom of expression.

According to him, public figures seeking leadership positions must be willing to accept scrutiny and criticism from citizens without resorting to legal intimidation.

He claimed that political leaders, including President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, are frequently subjected to criticism without pursuing legal action against their critics.

“Tinubu is criticised. Atiku is criticised. Even Obi’s supporters criticise other politicians daily. None of them has gone around suing people simply because they expressed opinions,” Okonkwo said.

He alleged that Obi’s decision to seek legal redress over comments made against him demonstrated what he described as an inability to accommodate differing views.

Warns Against ‘Authoritarian Tendencies’

The former Labour Party spokesperson further argued that if Obi struggles to handle criticism as a private citizen, concerns could arise over how he might react if entrusted with political power.

Okonkwo suggested that democratic leadership requires tolerance, emotional resilience, and the ability to engage constructively with critics.

“If someone cannot cope with criticism while holding no public office, Nigerians should be worried about how such a person would respond if given access to the instruments of state power,” he stated.

The lawyer maintained that Nigerians deserve leaders who can accommodate diverse opinions and uphold democratic freedoms regardless of political differences.

He also questioned Obi’s suitability for the nation’s highest office, insisting that the country requires leaders capable of embracing criticism rather than suppressing it.

Tensions Between Former Allies Deepen

The exchange marks another chapter in the deteriorating relationship between the two politicians, who were once close allies during the 2023 election cycle.

Okonkwo had been one of Obi’s most vocal supporters and defenders during the presidential campaign, frequently appearing on television and public platforms to advocate for the former Anambra State governor.

However, the relationship later soured amid disagreements over political strategy, party leadership issues, and the direction of the opposition movement.

Since their fallout, Okonkwo has repeatedly criticised Obi and some members of his political camp, while Obi’s supporters have accused the actor-turned-politician of turning against the movement he once championed.

Vows to Respond to Critics

In his latest statement, Okonkwo also vowed to directly challenge any supporter of Obi who visits his social media platforms to defend the former governor or attack him.

He insisted that he would no longer ignore what he described as provocative comments from Obi’s supporters.

The ADC chieftain maintained that he would continue expressing his views on national issues and political developments regardless of criticism or legal threats.

The controversy comes at a time when opposition politics is witnessing significant realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with political figures across different parties positioning themselves for future contests.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi has yet to publicly respond to Okonkwo’s latest remarks, although legal proceedings arising from previous allegations are expected to continue in the coming weeks.

The growing feud between the former allies is likely to remain a subject of intense political debate as Nigeria’s opposition landscape continues to evolve ahead of the next presidential election.
