Keir Starmer Announces Resignation as UK Prime Minister

Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, bringing an end to a turbulent tenure that lasted less than two years. He said he would remain in office until a successor is chosen through a leadership process set to begin in July.

In an emotional speech outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said his decision was guided by what he believed was best for the country.

“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” he said.

Leadership race begins

The Labour Party is expected to launch its leadership contest in July, with Starmer remaining as caretaker prime minister during the transition period. The party hopes to have a new leader in place before Parliament returns in September.

Attention has already turned to Andy Burnham, who is widely regarded as the frontrunner to succeed Starmer after recently returning to Parliament through a by-election victory.

Pressure mounted on Starmer

Starmer’s resignation follows months of growing dissatisfaction within Labour, poor local election results, internal party divisions, policy reversals, and declining public support. Several senior figures had publicly called for a change in leadership in recent months.

Although Starmer led Labour to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election, his government later faced criticism over economic policies, welfare reforms, controversial appointments, and the rise of the anti-immigration party Reform UK.

Britain’s seventh prime minister in a decade

Starmer’s departure means Britain is preparing for its seventh prime minister in just ten years, highlighting a period of significant political instability since the 2016 Brexit referendum.

In his farewell remarks, Starmer pledged his full support to whoever succeeds him.

“I will also give my successor my full and unequivocal support,” he said, expressing confidence that the next leader would continue moving the country forward.
