“Just Pay the Fee and I’ll Give You the Venue and Our People Will Decide, No Political Party Will Be Denied Campaign Venues” — Otti Assures Opposition of Fair Campaign Access
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has declared that opposition political parties are free to campaign anywhere in the state, provided they comply with the necessary requirements and pay the approved fees for the use of public facilities.
Speaking during an event in the state, Otti emphasized that his administration would not deny any political party access to campaign venues, insisting that the decision on who should lead ultimately rests with the people of Abia State.
The governor stated that any opposition party interested in using government-owned facilities for political activities would be granted approval once the stipulated charges are paid.
“We welcome competition from the opposition in Abia State. Any opposition party is free to apply for any location they want for campaigns. Once the required fee is paid, the venue will be made available,” he said.
According to Otti, the era when political opponents were allegedly prevented from using venues they had legitimately secured is over.
He noted that such actions created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation in the political process. “The days of panic are gone. Sometimes people paid for venues and were later stopped from using them. That is panic. If you know what you are doing and believe in your message, there should be no reason to panic,” the governor added.
He cited a recent example involving a request to use the township stadium, revealing that his administration approved the application after the prescribed fee was paid.
Otti stressed that democracy thrives when political actors are allowed to freely engage voters and present their programmes without unnecessary restrictions.
He maintained that after venues are made available, it is left for the electorate to determine which party or candidate deserves their support.
“Our people will decide whether they accept your message or not. The responsibility of government is to provide a level playing field, and that is what we are doing,” he said.
