Activist and former student leader, Atiku Isa, has said that anyone seeking to lead Nigeria must be prepared to confront the country’s entrenched political challenges if they hope to earn the support of citizens demanding change.

Isa made the remark during an interview on SYMFONI, where he spoke extensively about the state of Nigeria’s democracy, electoral process and the qualities required of future presidential candidates.

According to him, the country’s political environment remains heavily influenced by money, weak institutions and powerful interests that often resist reform efforts.

He argued that aspiring leaders must demonstrate courage and a willingness to challenge perceived injustices rather than adopting what he described as a passive approach to politics.

Quoting the headline, Isa said, “You must be ready for a fight. Once you are ready for a fight, then we can support you.”

The activist stressed that political leadership requires more than making promises during campaigns, insisting that candidates must show they are capable of standing firm when confronted with obstacles.

He maintained that many of Nigeria’s challenges persist because those entrusted with leadership positions are unwilling to confront powerful individuals and institutions responsible for maintaining the status quo.

According to Isa, calls for peace should not be interpreted as an excuse for inaction in the face of wrongdoing.

He argued that genuine reform often requires political courage, especially in a system where vested interests benefit from existing structures.

The former student leader further noted that the country’s electoral system remains a difficult terrain for reform-minded politicians, citing concerns about the influence of money and public distrust in key democratic institutions.

He said any presidential candidate hoping to transform Nigeria must understand the realities of the political environment and be prepared to challenge practices that undermine democracy.

Isa also lamented what he described as growing divisions within some national institutions, warning that regional and political interests could weaken organisations meant to promote unity and representation.

Despite the challenges, he expressed optimism that Nigeria could still achieve meaningful progress if leaders demonstrate commitment, courage and accountability.

He urged citizens to carefully assess the character and resolve of those seeking public office, insisting that leadership should be measured not only by promises but also by the willingness to defend principles when tested.

Isa concluded that Nigeria’s future depends on leaders who are prepared to confront difficult realities and pursue reforms regardless of political pressure or personal consequences.
