According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has stated that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was among several political actors who consented to the idea of adopting a rotational presidency arrangement in Nigeria after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as a defining moment in the country’s democratic journey.
He made this disclosure on Tuesday while addressing questions during a World Press Conference held in Abuja.
The briefing formed part of activities organized to commemorate Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary, focusing on the country’s democratic evolution and political developments over the years.
According to Akume, the decision to embrace a rotational presidency concept was introduced as a response to the political tension and national imbalance that followed the annulled election, which was originally won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.
He explained that the arrangement was also intended to strengthen unity and ensure broader participation across different regions of the country.
He further emphasized that the principle behind rotational leadership was meant to promote inclusiveness and reduce political friction by giving various sections of the country a sense of belonging in governance.
The SGF noted that such an approach was considered part of the broader efforts to stabilize the political system after a period of significant democratic disruption.
Akume also highlighted that Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic rule spanning 27 years reflects a sustained effort to uphold democratic governance.
He noted that this period has been marked by continued commitment to political participation, expression of civic rights, and the strengthening of democratic institutions within the country’s political framework.
He added that the endurance of democratic governance over nearly three decades demonstrates the country’s dedication to maintaining a system that prioritizes political freedom and inclusivity.
