JUST IN: Terrorists attack Chibok community in Borno, burn houses

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked Awapul, a community in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, in the early hours of Sunday, destroying homes and shops.

The attack reportedly occurred around 1:30 a.m., with gunmen arriving in large numbers, firing sporadically before targeting private properties and critical infrastructure.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said no lives were lost despite the scale of destruction.

“There was an attack this morning around 1:30 a.m. in Chibok Local Government, in a village called Awapul.

“The attack was carried out by unknown men suspected to be Boko Haram.

“No casualties. It was a destruction of properties,” he said.

Residents said the attackers, who reportedly rode motorcycles, operated for over an hour without interruption.

A local resident, who requested anonymity, said several affected individuals have fled to safer areas.

“They burned down houses and small shops. Some owners have gone to Chibok main town to take refuge,” the source said.

The resident also called on authorities to strengthen security in the area.

“Our plea is simple, not food or clothes. What we need is protection so we can go about our daily activities,” the source added.

The incident comes less than 24 hours after similar attacks in other parts of Borno State. Suspected Boko Haram fighters had earlier targeted an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Damasak and the Nganzai Divisional Police Headquarters.

According to the police, the attackers used Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and other sophisticated weapons in an attempt to overrun the areas but were repelled by security forces.

However, the attack resulted in the deaths of four police officers and one hunter, while parts of the police facility and an unserviceable Armoured Personnel Carrier were damaged.

In another related incident on April 4, terrorists attacked the Mallam Fatori IDP Camp in Damasak, targeting a Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and hunters’ duty post at the camp entrance.

During that હુમattack, one member of the hunters’ group was killed, and about 20 thatched houses, along with other properties, were destroyed.
