JUST IN: Individuals convicted under such laws should face the maximum penalties prescribed by law – FESCA

According to a report by the Punch on Sunday, June 21, 2026, a civil society group, the Foundation for Ethical Society and Cultural Awareness (FESCA), has urged the Federal Government to establish special courts dedicated to the speedy trial of terrorism, kidnapping and banditry cases across Nigeria.

The organisation said such courts would help fast-track justice and improve the country’s response to rising insecurity, which it described as a growing threat to lives and property nationwide.

In a statement issued by one of its members, Nosa Osaikhuiwu, FESCA also called for tougher sanctions against those convicted of violent crimes, including kidnappers, bandits and terrorists, as well as their collaborators.

“Individuals convicted under such laws should face the maximum penalties prescribed by law. Persons found to have aided, harboured, financed or concealed information relating to terrorists and kidnappers should also be liable to prosecution.

The group further stressed that Nigeria was at a critical point in its security challenges and required urgent reforms, including improved intelligence gathering and stronger legal frameworks to address criminal activities.

It also proposed broader security measures such as the creation of community intelligence networks, enhanced surveillance systems, and closer cooperation between security agencies and local communities to curb insecurity across the country.
