Julia Burch Reveals Why She Was Desperately Googling ‘How To Get Taller’

Julia Burch once worried that three inches, or perhaps a few more, could stand between her and the career she wanted.

Standing 5-foot-3, the Canadian creator dreamed of becoming a fashion model and admired stars like Bella Hadid. However, after early conversations with modeling agencies left her discouraged about her height, Burch eventually found another route into the spotlight, one that allowed her to build an audience on her own terms.

Long before social media became her career, Julia Burch had her sights set on the traditional modeling industry.

The creator told The Blast exclusively that she looked up to established models, including Bella Hadid, and wanted the opportunity to follow a similar path. Her height, however, quickly became a source of concern as she began exploring the industry.

At 5-foot-3, Burch found herself confronting expectations that made her question whether the career she imagined was even possible.

“It was really discouraging and I often felt really sad,” Burch told The Blast. “I remember Googling constantly, like, how to get taller.”

She did not immediately abandon the dream. Burch continued pursuing opportunities and even traveled to Toronto for a photoshoot connected to an agency.

Still, the traditional route never developed into the career she had envisioned.

Instead of allowing that disappointment to end her modeling ambitions altogether, Burch began taking matters into her own hands. She started shooting photos for social media, sometimes alongside her identical twin sister, and gradually attracted an audience.

“Eventually it gained a bunch of traction and now it’s my job,” Burch exclusively told The Blast. “It’s super cool.”

Julia Burch’s Online Success Comes With A Relentless Content Grind

Building her own platform gave Burch an opportunity that modeling agencies had not, but turning social media into a career created a different challenge as there is rarely an “off” switch.

Burch now creates content across several platforms and estimates that she posts approximately 15 times every day. Maintaining that pace means organizing outfits, planning concepts, filming content and keeping an eye on trends that can change rapidly.

That workload has also forced her to reconsider how much perfection really matters online.

“Sometimes I’ll take a photo and I’m like, ‘Wow, it’s perfect. I love this photo. It’s amazing,’” she told The Blast.

Other photos do not necessarily inspire the same confidence. Rather than allowing self-criticism to stop her from publishing, however, Burch has learned to prioritize consistency.

“Posting something that’s not perfect in my eyes is better than posting nothing,” Burch said. “I try to remind myself that I’m always my biggest critic.”

Burch Says Trying To Fit In Left Her Feeling Insecure

Julia Burch’s experience with self-criticism did not stop at deciding which photos were worthy of posting.

As her online identity evolved, she experimented heavily with her appearance. Today, she describes her personal style as grunge or alternative, but getting there required figuring out which trends actually felt authentic to her.

At different points, Burch experimented with blonde, blue and pink hair and embraced the e-girl aesthetic that had exploded across social media.

Eventually, something began to feel wrong.

“I was starting to feel really insecure and I wasn’t sure why,” she said.. “Then I realised it was because I was trying to fit myself in a box that I didn’t fit into.”

Changing her hair back to a darker shade helped her reconnect with the version of herself she felt she had lost while trying to fit an aesthetic.

“I started to feel like more of myself again,” Burch said.

She is an identical twin, and while the sisters have appeared together in content, Burch said some viewers struggle to separate their appearances from their individual identities.

“A lot of people kind of see us as the same person,” she told The Blast. “They expect us to act the exact same, or like the exact same things, or have our hair the same colour or dress the same.”

The resemblance is undeniable, but Burch believes that should not erase the differences between them.

“We are very alike in so many ways, but we’re also completely different people,” she explained.

Julia Burch Credits Twitch With Helping Her Overcome Extreme Shyness

Julia Burch’s transformation has not only been visual. Growing up, she described herself as extremely shy, something that might seem difficult to reconcile with a career that now requires putting herself in front of a large audience every day.

Streaming helped change that. “I feel like streaming on Twitch has really helped me become more social and better at talking,” Burch said.

With more than 100,000 followers on Twitch, she does not approach those broadcasts as an opportunity to create an exaggerated version of herself. Instead, she treats streaming more like an ongoing conversation.

“I try not to sort of put on a persona when I stream,” Burch shared. “I try to just be myself as much as possible.”

“I definitely want to portray a very true version of myself and just be as authentic and real as possible,” she added.

For Burch, that authenticity may be one of the biggest differences between the career she originally imagined and the one she ultimately created.

A traditional modeling career once seemed dependent on whether an agency believed she fit its requirements. Her online career has instead given her control over her style, content and relationship with the people following her.

That audience has brought something she did not necessarily anticipate when she first started posting photographs.

“The best part is probably getting to know so many different people from different parts of the world,” Burch said. “I’ve learned so much about different cultures and languages.”
