J.D. Vance Calls ‘Emily In Paris’ The ‘Shakespeare Of Our Time’

J.D. Vance has heaped praise on Netflix’s hit romantic comedy “Emily in Paris,” declaring it a “masterwork of American television” and the “Shakespeare of our time.”

However, social media users slammed his take, with some suggesting he was trying to score political points with younger voters.

Despite his busy schedule, the vice president previously shared that he protects a couple of hours of “sacred time” with his family every day and loves making breakfast for his children.

Unlike critics who have ripped the series as “a whirlwind of nonsense” and “contemptibly moronic,” J.D. Vance thinks “Emily in Paris” is worth its weight in gold.

The vice president offered what he called a deep “meta-analysis” of the show, claiming it goes beyond high fashion and French fine dining to offer a conservative critique of modern millennial life.

“Emily in Paris is about this sort of bubbly girl who goes to Paris and has a cool job and has great experiences and drinks fine wine and does all the things you would do in Paris,” he said.

“But what it actually is is a massive cultural criticism of millennial decision-making. She goes to Paris, and it’s obvious to everybody watching the show that she should end up with the French chef [the character Gabriel, played by Lucas Bravo],” he noted.

The romantic comedy-drama follows marketing executive Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins, who moves from the U.S. to Paris after landing her dream job.

Once there, she faces a language barrier and cultural clashes while navigating a messy love triangle with her handsome chef neighbor, Gabriel, played by Lucas Bravo, and his girlfriend.

Vance argued that the lead characters were destined for each other. In his view, however, they reflect millennials’ struggles with life decisions, repeatedly sabotaging their happiness by prioritizing career ambitions and short-term flings.

“She should marry this guy. They should start a family. Whether in Paris or America, they should build a life together. That’s what they should be doing,” Vance urged.

“Instead, they make a series of absurd, sometimes hilarious, sometimes not particularly believable mistakes… The fact that they keep on making atrocious decisions is kind of like the best bit of cultural commentary, I would say cultural criticism of my generation, the millennials. It is, at the risk of overstating it, the Shakespeare of our time,” he added.

J.D. Vance’s hot take drew sharp criticism as social media users weighed in.

“It’s like listening to ChatGPT try to convince you it’s human based on the one television show it knows,” an X user mocked, while another added, “This dude is cornier than a sh-tty dad joke.”

“It’s literally one of the worst shows I’ve ever seen. This guy cannot have a single sane take, can he?” someone else wrote.

Others questioned how he found time to watch the series, with one writing, “This mf is sitting around watching rom coms while we’re at war and can’t afford f-cking food.”

Vance has previously spoken about making room for his family despite his job’s demands.

During an August 2025 appearance on “The Katie Miller Podcast,” the vice president revealed that he dedicates a couple of hours every day to spending time with his wife and children.

“The thing that I try to do, and maybe this is like a good piece of advice for, you know, husbands and fathers, is, I try to take a couple of hours every day and make them as sacred as possible,” he said. “Yes, if, like, a war breaks out, then sometimes you have to cancel even the sacred time. But we’ve been pretty good about making sure that I have at least a couple of hours with my family every single day.”

“And sometimes that means, you know, I’m on the phone until 3 a.m., or sometimes that means I’m back in the White House after I put the kids to bed. But just have that sacred time that you protect, that you tune out the phone, you tune out work, and you just focus on your wife and your kids. And that’s – I think – that’s worked very well for us,” Vance added.

Host Katie Miller then asked about his daily routine. Vance explained that it varies with his job, but he typically reserves 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for his family and enjoys making breakfast for his children.

“We’ll typically, you know, again, I try to have 6:00 to 8:00 be that time where we have dinner together and just hang out with the kids,” he said. “Usually there’s something going on from 8 to midnight. And if it’s an easy night, you’re done by 10:00. And if it’s a tough night, you’re done at 2:00.”

He added, “I actually like to make stuff as much as I can because, again, when you’re vice president, you live in a bubble. I try to have as many of these rituals as possible that just remind the kids, ‘I’m still your dad.’”
