“It is foolish to use your brother as your next of kin” — Female pastor tells men

A female pastor has sparked conversations online after advising married men to name their wives, rather than their brothers or fathers, as their official next of kin.

Speaking during a church sermon, the pastor argued that a man’s primary responsibility is to his wife and children.

She maintained that they should be recognised as his closest family members in both legal and personal matters.

Pastor explains why wives should be next of kin

Addressing the congregation, the pastor warned men against listing their brothers, parents or other relatives as next of kin.

According to her, a brother is more likely to prioritise the welfare of his own family over that of his sibling’s wife and children if anything happens.

“Men, you don’t put next of kin as your brother or your father. Because your brother is not going to take care of your children. He will take care of his children first before your children.”

She added that it is unwise for married men to overlook their wives when making such important decisions.

“So it is a foolish thing to put your brother and say, but they are my people. No, your people are your wife and your children first. They are your next of kin.”

Extends advice to married women

The pastor also directed the same advice to married women, insisting that a husband should be recognised as his wife’s next of kin instead of her parents or siblings.

“Your husband is the next of kin and not your sister or your family.”

She further discouraged couples from listing multiple names on official records, including documents with organisations such as NNPC or the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“Don’t put two people’s names on the thing. Put your brother and your wife in NNPC or CBN. Put only your wife’s name. That is the will of God. Any other thing is outside the mind of God.”
