Indian Teen Allegedly Spent the Last Five Years in a Pond to Soothe Painful Skin Condition
A 16-year-old boy from West Bengal, India, reportedly spent much of the past five years inside local ponds because the water eased a painful burning sensation across his body.
Iqbal Sheikh, who lives in Murshidabad district, said the pain becomes unbearable whenever he stays outside the water for too long. Returning to a pond reportedly brings temporary relief.
Iqbal sometimes remained in the water for several days and nights. Videos showed him eating while submerged up to his chest as residents brought him snacks and other supplies.
His family said they took him to hospitals and traditional healers, but no one could explain or treat the condition. Financial problems also prevented them from seeking long-term private medical care.
Iqbal believes his suffering may be caused by a “jinn, fairy or other supernatural entity”. However, doctors have not found evidence supporting a supernatural cause.
Some people online suggested that he may have erythromelalgia. The rare condition can cause burning pain, warmth and redness, usually in the hands and feet. Cooling may reduce the pain.
However, doctors have not confirmed that Iqbal has the condition. He needs a full medical assessment to determine the cause of his symptoms.
Spending so much time in pond water has also created new health concerns. His skin reportedly became pale and waterlogged, while he developed coughing and cold-like symptoms.
Doctors have warned that staying in water for long periods can soften and damage the skin. It can also increase the risk of cracks, fungal infections and bacterial infections.
Iqbal’s story eventually attracted the attention of businessman Anant Ambani. He reportedly arranged for the teenager to be flown more than 1,300 miles to Mumbai.
Iqbal has now been admitted to Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, where specialists are examining him and trying to identify the condition behind his pain.
