According to a video on NBC News, on Monday June 8, 2026, President Donald Trump said the conflict with Iran would end in one of two ways, through a negotiated deal or through additional military force — and suggested that military action was in many ways the simpler of the two options available to him.
Trump had been discussing the progress of ongoing nuclear deal negotiations with a new group of Iranian leaders when he addressed the question of the conflict’s ultimate resolution.
He described the diplomatic path as the preferred route but made clear that his patience had limits and that the military alternative was a fully developed and ready option.
The President framed the choice between diplomacy and military force in practical terms, saying that striking Iran militarily would in some respects be more straightforward than the complexities involved in reaching and implementing a negotiated settlement.
He said the United States had already demonstrated its military capability decisively and that any further action would be swift and overwhelming.
In his words, Donald Trump said, “I’m going to finish it. But remember, you were in Vietnam nineteen years because stupid people, you were in so many different countries.
“Every war you were in for years. We’re there for a few months and the threat is largely over. Soon it will be over. I’m going to put it out permanently.
“I’m going to do it either through negotiation where we’re very close to a deal or I’m going to blow the hell out of them to be honest with you. And it’s going to be very easy for them to do. That’s actually the easier path,” he said.
Trump maintained that either path would result in a permanent end to Iran’s nuclear threat, and that the United States would emerge from the situation in a position of strength.
