“I Left It As I Met It”- Man Removes POP Ceiling After Landlord Increases Rent Following Renovations

A man has sparked reactions online after revealing how he responded when his landlord allegedly increased his rent shortly after he spent a significant amount of money furnishing and upgrading the apartment.

According to the account making the rounds on social media, the tenant had invested in improvements including a POP ceiling and other fittings to make the apartment more comfortable. However, after noticing the upgrades, the landlord reportedly increased the rent.

Feeling frustrated by the development, the tenant decided to remove the installations he personally paid for before vacating the property. Photos and videos shared online showed parts of the apartment stripped of the fittings, with the man reportedly leaving the house in the same condition he met it before moving in.

The incident has triggered a debate on social media, with many Nigerians sharing experiences of landlords increasing rent after tenants improve their properties. While some users defended the tenant’s actions, arguing that he had every right to remove what he purchased, others questioned whether dismantling the fittings could expose him to legal consequences.

Several commenters also advised tenants against carrying out expensive renovations on rented properties without clear agreements regarding ownership of the improvements.
