I Didn’t Want Him Back In Politics – El-Rufai’s Wife Speaks On Husband’s Detention
Asiya El-Rufai, wife of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has spoken on her husband’s continued detention, saying he should be given a fair hearing.
She made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, where she reflected on the personal sacrifices involved in her husband’s years in public service.
Naija News reports that Asiya said she had expected Nasir El-Rufai to leave politics after completing his tenure as Kaduna governor because of the pressure and difficulties the career created for their family.
However, she explained that her husband still sees public service as a responsibility he cannot ignore.
She said Nasir El-Rufai remains committed to contributing to society whenever he believes his experience can be useful, despite the challenges that come with political involvement.
The former governor’s wife also recalled her involvement in his political activities across Kaduna State, noting that she travelled to different parts of the state while supporting his work.
She said their efforts during that period were well documented, adding that her husband’s decision to remain in politics was based on his belief that he still had a role to play in serving the people.
She said: “There’s no place that I did not enter in Kaduna, and the records are there because my husband believed in him because my husband said this is where we go.
“I didn’t want my husband to be involved in politics again. It has taken its toll on us. But service for Mallam is a calling. He believes that if he can still contribute, he would do that.”
