According to a report by The Cable, Actress Omoshalewa Yusuf, better known by her stage as Basira Beere, has spoken up about the horrific events surrounding her failed marriage.

She claims that she was a victim of domestic violence on many occasions, which ultimately resulted in the miscarriages of her unborn children.

In an interview that aired recently on the Talk to B podcast, the actress revealed that her marriage had been a hopeful beginning to a relationship that swiftly descended into abuse.

According to Basira, she disregarded her friends’ warnings about marrying a man they believed was lower class and financially than her at first. According to her, she was so committed to the marriage that she paid for a large chunk of the wedding herself—roughly 70%—in an effort to be there for her spouse.

But she added that things went downhill for the couple shortly after the wedding.

She claims that the first violent episode happened when she replied to a man’s wedding congratulations with the word “dear.” This, she said, made her husband furious, which in turn led to physical abuse and the beginning of a pattern of violent outbursts.

“His problem started two to three days after the wedding,” she recalled, adding that things intensified rapidly and were challenging to manage.

Basira further asserted that she stayed in the marriage for longer than necessary due to the encouragement she received from her family to do so. According to her, even after she reported instances of abuse, her parents would often tell her to stay in the relationship despite the difficulties rather than leave.

She went on to say that she was physically assaulted because of trivial arguments, such those over music tastes. She recounted an incident where she was assaulted and left bleeding after an altercation involving Fuji music artists. Her phone was also smashed.

As a result of the severe beatings, the actress disclosed that she experienced the loss of about four pregnancies. She cited a particularly violent event that happened just after one of the miscarriages as the catalyst for her decision to end the marriage.

According to her, the moment she recognised she couldn’t continue the connection, “Within hours, I started feeling pain in my stomach, and then I saw blood,” she added.

Basira elaborated by saying that the violence made her feel threatened and that she thought about taking action if the abuse persisted. The emotional toll, she added, was exacerbated by what she saw as continual devaluation of her professional and personal value.

She claimed that she came to the realisation at the height of the conflict that the relationship had grown toxic and may lead to tragic consequences if left unchecked.
