“He Had No ₦50k for Me but Spent ₦145k in One Day” — Man Recounts Friendship That Ended Over Money
A man has sparked conversations online after sharing the story of how a long-standing friendship came to an abrupt end following an encounter that changed the way he viewed his friend’s priorities.
According to the man, the incident occurred about two years ago during a period when he was struggling financially and urgently needed assistance.
Hoping to get temporary support, he approached a close friend and requested a loan of ₦50,000.
However, his friend reportedly told him he was broke and could not afford to lend out any money at the time.
Accepting the explanation, the man said he stayed behind to chat with his friend, unaware that the events that would unfold later that day would leave him questioning everything he had been told.
While they were still talking, the friend’s girlfriend and her younger sister reportedly arrived at the house.
Shortly after, the friend suggested that all four of them go out to eat together.
According to the narrator, they headed to a restaurant where everyone ordered meals. In addition to their food, the girlfriend and her sister reportedly requested takeaway orders as well.
By the end of the outing, the total bill had reportedly climbed to approximately ₦100,000.
To his surprise, his friend settled the entire bill without hesitation.
The spending did not end there.
The man claimed that after the meal, the girlfriend mentioned that she needed money to get her hair done.
Without delay, the friend allegedly transferred ₦45,000 to her account.
Having watched his friend spend a significant amount of money throughout the day, the man said he became confused about the earlier claim of being broke.
When they eventually returned home, he reminded his friend about the ₦50,000 loan request he had made earlier.
According to him, the response he received marked the end of their friendship.
“How can you be asking me for that kind of money after I’ve spent so much today? I already told you I don’t have it,” the friend reportedly replied.
The man said he was stunned by the statement.
To him, the issue was no longer about whether his friend had the money, but rather where he chose to spend it and who he considered worthy of his financial support.
Feeling hurt and disappointed, he said he left immediately and never returned.
The story has since gone viral, generating mixed reactions across social media.
While some users argued that people have the right to spend their money however they choose, others said the incident demonstrated that being told “I don’t have money” often means “I don’t want to spend money on this.”
Many commenters noted that financial matters have ended countless friendships, especially when expectations and priorities differ.
Others viewed the situation as a reminder that a person’s spending habits can sometimes reveal more about their relationships than their words ever will.
