“Governors Budgeting ₦800bn for Tinubu’s 2027 Campaign” — Kenneth Okonkwo Blasts Administration Over Economy, Insecurity

Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has alleged that state governors across the country are already mobilising massive financial resources to support President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesperson made the claim while appearing on Inside Sources hosted by Laolu Akande on Channels Television, where he delivered a scathing assessment of the Tinubu administration nearly three years after it assumed office.

Okonkwo alleged that politics has become the only sector flourishing under the current government, claiming that governors are already setting aside about ₦800 billion to finance political activities ahead of the next presidential election.

According to him, the administration is focused on suppressing political opposition and ensuring there is no serious contest in 2027.

“This is the government of catastrophe. The only viable business today is politics,” he said.

“The governors are already budgeting ₦800 billion to support the campaign. That is the only industry that is blossoming under Tinubu because he does not want any contest in 2027.”

The Nollywood actor-turned-politician further described the current administration as a failure marked by economic hardship, worsening insecurity and rising debt burdens.

He argued that many Nigerians are struggling under severe economic pressure and accused the Federal Government of failing to fulfil most of its promises to citizens.

According to Okonkwo, the only pledge the President has consistently kept is borrowing funds through successive national budgets.

“First of all, let’s be realistic, this has been three years of catastrophe,” he stated.

“The only thing I can concede to President Tinubu is that in the budget, all the amounts he said he was going to borrow, he borrowed it. That is the only thing he fulfilled.”

Okonkwo also criticised the government’s approach to debt management, warning that Nigeria could be heading toward serious fiscal trouble if borrowing continues without corresponding growth in production and revenue generation.

He accused the administration of relying on what he described as misleading economic calculations based on Gross Domestic Product (GDP), despite weak productive output in the country.

“A government that is not producing anything is now dubiously computing our debts based on GDP,” he said.

“Any country that is not a producing nation, you have to denominate your debt to your revenue because you will run into problems. Soon, you will be bankrupt.”

He added that the harsh economic environment has made business survival increasingly difficult, especially for local entrepreneurs operating without access to foreign currency.

“You have to be a billionaire in dollars for your businesses in Nigeria to survive,” he added.

Speaking further on the state of national security, Okonkwo said insecurity has deteriorated significantly under the current administration, describing Nigeria as a “killing field.”

He argued that the country’s global security standing reflects the severity of the crisis facing citizens daily.

“Nigeria has become a killing field,” he declared.

“You have 195 countries on earth, and Nigeria is the fourth most terrorised nation.”
