According to details from Lars Anderson’s book, “Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness,” shared by the Daily Mail. Brady reportedly kept the letter and returned to it on nights when he was thinking about their marriage.

Bündchen wrote the letter weeks after Brady and the New England Patriots lost the 2018 Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles, according to the Daily Mail’s account of Anderson’s book.

She reportedly told Brady that their marriage wasn’t working and that she needed more of him as a husband and father. Even when he was home, she wanted him to be present with the family instead of responding to messages on his phone or mentally replaying a game.

Bündchen expressed that she wanted more help with their children, the chance to sleep in a few days a week, and more time to devote to her own career.

The couple went to marriage counseling, according to the report. Brady also kept her letter in a drawer and would sometimes take it out to reread. Anderson’s account says he wanted the reminder to give his marriage the same attention he gave his work.

A Former Teammate Described The Imbalance Bündchen Felt

One of Brady’s former teammates told Anderson that Bündchen had a demanding career of her own and had grown tired of arranging her life around the NFL season.

“People need to understand that Gisele was a bigger international star than Tom,” the former teammate said. “She was getting tired of living on Tom’s schedule and being somewhat in his shadow during football season. She has a lot of pride, too. And, I mean, how many times did you see Tom supporting her career? There clearly were imbalances there.”

The letter also came after Bündchen had already raised the possibility of Brady leaving football. Following the Patriots’ Super Bowl victory in 2017, she asked whether it might be the right time for him to retire, according to the book’s account. When she pressed him again later, Brady eventually replied, “Too bad, babe. I’m having too much fun right now.”

For Bündchen, the issue described in the letter went beyond when Brady might retire. She was asking what their family life could look like while he was still playing.

Brady’s Career Continued After The Letter

Brady played for several more years. He announced his retirement in February 2022, then reversed course 40 days later and said he would return for another season.

Before his initial announcement, Brady had acknowledged that the decision affected more than just him. “It’s not always what I want,” he said in January 2022. “It’s what we want as a family. And I’m gonna spend a lot of time with them and figure out in the future what’s next.”

His return to the field meant the family would face another football season.

Brady and Bündchen announced their divorce in October 2022, ending their 13-year marriage.

Tom said they had reached the decision “amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together.” He described the divorce as painful and difficult, said their children would remain their priority, and wished Gisele well.

Gisele also expressed gratitude for their time together and said their children would remain her priority. On why the marriage ended, she wrote, “The decision to end a marriage is never easy, but we have grown apart.” She said they would continue co-parenting and wished Tom the best.

Brady retired from the NFL for good in 2023 and moved into broadcasting with FOX Sports. He and Bündchen continue to share Benjamin and Vivian. Brady is also father to his eldest son, Jack, whom he shares with Bridget Moynahan.

Bündchen has since started a new chapter with Joaquim Valente, the jiu-jitsu instructor she married in a private Florida ceremony in December 2025. The couple welcomed a son in 2025, giving Benjamin and Vivian a younger brother.
