Germans Downplay Trump Troop Withdrawal, Say Security Unlikely to Be Affected
Germany is reacting with relative calm after the Donald Trump administration announced plans to withdraw around 5,000 US troops from the country, with leaders and analysts saying the move is unlikely to significantly affect national security.
The decision, which affects part of the roughly 35,000 American troops stationed in Germany, was framed by US officials as a response to German criticism of Washington’s Iran war strategy and concerns over allied burden-sharing. However, German officials have largely dismissed the military implications.
Senior figures in Berlin, including Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, described the move as “foreseeable,” while Chancellor Friedrich Merz said troop rotations and adjustments of this scale are routine and do not represent a major strategic shift.
Analysts note that Germany has significantly increased its defence spending and military readiness since earlier tensions during Trump’s first term, reducing reliance on US troop levels for immediate security needs. Most experts say the withdrawal of 5,000 troops is unlikely to materially change NATO’s posture in Europe.
However, concerns are growing about the broader strategic message, particularly after reports that a planned US missile deployment to Germany was also cancelled. Some European officials warn this could weaken deterrence against Russia and signal reduced coordination within NATO.
The economic impact is expected to be more immediate at the local level. Communities near major US bases, such as Ramstein Air Base, depend heavily on American military personnel for business activity, housing demand, and services. Local business owners say even a partial withdrawal could hurt small enterprises reliant on US troops.
Security analysts argue that the larger concern is not the troop reduction itself, but the lack of consultation between Washington and European allies, which they say risks undermining trust within the alliance.
Despite the political tensions, German officials are not signalling alarm, reflecting a broader shift toward treating US policy changes under Trump as unpredictable but manageable rather than destabilising.
