Gains Of Subsidy Removal Still Illusive -Amaechi
Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has stated that the fuel subsidy removed by the present administration drove up the cost of fuel, yet the supposed gains of the subsidy removal remain invisible to the economy.
Amaechi, who saluted Nigerian Workers on the occasion of the International Workers’ Day, noted that despite their sacrifices, many of the workers still struggle under poor conditions, inadequate wages, and limited opportunities.
In a post on his X handle on Friday, the former governor of Rivers State, also lamented that an increase in minimum wage, almost immediately clawed back through taxation and rising costs of living. Adding that what was given with one hand was taken away with the other. An act he described as truly deceptive.
Amaechi, who was also the former Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, said the act was unfair to the hardworking men and women of Nigeria, the civil servants, teachers, health workers, farmers, artisans, and private sector employees who keep the nation’s economy alive.
“They can barely afford decent housing, affordable transportation, quality education, and healthcare. And each day, the burden grows heavier.
This is not the future our people deserve. A nation cannot prosper when its workforce is neglected,” he said.
Amaechi said as one who aspires to lead, and who has always stood firmly on the values of accountability, transparency, performance, and delivery, workers deserve more than promises and election-season gimmicks.
“They deserve results. They deserve fair, people-centered policies, thriving industries, jobs that pay decently, pensions that are secure, and infrastructure that supports productivity,” he added.
While saluting the Nigerian workers on the occasion of their Day, the politician called for collective action to build a country where hard work is rewarded, where government is felt in the daily lives of citizens, and where prosperity is shared by all.
