Residents of Dan Gulbi community in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State have been thrown into mourning once again following another deadly attack by suspected bandits, barely 48 hours after a previous assault reportedly claimed 17 lives.

According to local sources, the armed attackers stormed the village on Tuesday morning at about 8:00 a.m., arriving in large numbers on motorcycles before unleashing a barrage of gunfire on unsuspecting residents.

The sudden attack sent panic through the community as villagers scrambled for safety, fleeing in different directions to escape the heavily armed assailants.

Community members alleged that at least 20 people were killed during the latest invasion, although the exact number of casualties had yet to be officially confirmed by security authorities at the time of filing this report.

In addition to the reported loss of lives, several houses were said to have been set ablaze by the attackers, leaving many families displaced and homeless. Residents also disclosed that a number of people remained unaccounted for, raising fears that the death toll could rise as search efforts continue.

One resident, who requested anonymity for security reasons, recounted the terrifying experience, saying the attackers targeted people gathered under makeshift shelters before opening fire indiscriminately.

“They came into the village and immediately started shooting. Everyone began running for their lives. It was complete chaos as people tried to escape the bullets,” the source said.

The latest assault comes just days after the same community suffered a devastating attack on Sunday when bandits reportedly invaded Dan Gulbi on more than 150 motorcycles.

During that earlier raid, at least 17 people, including visitors who had travelled to celebrate the Sallah festivities, were reportedly killed. The attackers were also said to have looted approximately 20 shops, carting away goods and valuables worth millions of naira.

The repeated attacks have heightened fear and anxiety among residents, many of whom say they now live under constant threat of violence. Community leaders and residents have appealed to the Federal Government, Sokoto State Government, and security agencies to take urgent action to protect lives and property in the area.

They warned that the continued attacks could trigger a humanitarian crisis if decisive measures are not taken to restore peace and security in the affected communities.

Reacting to the development, the spokesperson of the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufai, confirmed that the command received a distress call from Tureta regarding the attack.

He stated that security personnel were immediately deployed to the area to assess the situation and restore calm.

According to him, the police command is still awaiting a detailed report from officers on the ground before providing an official account of the incident.

The latest tragedy underscores the persistent security challenges facing communities across parts of northwestern Nigeria, where bandit attacks, kidnappings, and cattle rustling continue to pose serious threats despite ongoing military and security operations.
