Five Terrorists Arrested After Attack on Security Camp in Oyo

The Oyo State Government has announced the arrest of five suspected terrorists following an attack on a security base along the Igbeti-Igboho Road in the Oke Ogun area of the state.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the attackers stormed the base, operated by men of Operation Burst, in the early hours of Sunday and allegedly made away with a generator and a motorcycle.

The Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, disclosed the arrests in a statement on Monday.

Oyelade said the suspects were apprehended in military uniforms, adding that security agencies were expecting to make more arrests in connection with the incident.

“Not less than five of the terrorists have been arrested in military uniforms. More arrests are expected to be made,” he said.

The commissioner also disclosed that the Acting Governor, Bayo Lawal, had visited the scene of the attack to assess the situation.

Meanwhile, the incident has, however, drawn criticism from the opposition All Progressives Congress in the state, which described the attack as evidence of security lapses.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare, the Oyo APC questioned the effectiveness of the state government’s security arrangements, particularly the surveillance aircraft recently acquired by the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde.

The party expressed concern that the attackers were able to operate for more than an hour without being tracked or intercepted by aerial surveillance.

It said the attack was particularly troubling because Igbeti was reportedly the location of a base station for the surveillance aircraft.

“Since the day Gov Makinde celebrated the purported delivery of the two aircraft, nothing has either been heard or felt about their deployment to survey the airspace in the state,” the party said.

The opposition party alleged that the inability of the surveillance system to detect or track the attackers raised questions about the government’s security claims.

“Therefore, it is safe to say that the whole story about security surveillance aircraft is another scam,” the APC stated.

The party also criticised Makinde over his frequent opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, describing his position as a reflection of what it called inadequate understanding of economic management.

The attack comes amid renewed security concerns in the South-West, with authorities under pressure to strengthen intelligence gathering and rapid-response mechanisms against armed groups.

In neighbouring Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke has also directed security agencies to arrest those allegedly responsible for the killing of his associate, Olamilekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, in Ile-Ife.

Oyeyemi, a member of the Accord Party, was reportedly shot dead on Sunday at Mayfair Garage during a dispute allegedly linked to control of a motor park.

Adeleke directed the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, to apprehend all persons allegedly involved in the killing and ordered rival groups involved in the dispute to immediately vacate the affected motor parks.

The governor, through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, warned that the government would not tolerate further breakdown of law and order.

“Law and order must be maintained. There will be no sacred cows as all culprits will be brought to book,” Adeleke said.
