FG Plans to Take Social Media Influencers to Battlefront as Insecurity Debate Intensifies

The Federal Government is considering a new initiative that would allow selected social media influencers and online commentators to visit military operational areas across the country in a bid to provide them with a firsthand understanding of the security challenges facing Nigerian troops.

Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, disclosed the plan while speaking on efforts being made to improve public understanding of the ongoing fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats.

According to the minister, the proposed visits are designed to expose influential voices on social media to the realities confronting soldiers on the frontlines and the sacrifices being made by members of the armed forces in various conflict zones.

Influencers May Visit Military Operations

Badaru explained that the government is exploring ways to include prominent social media personalities in guided tours of military operations in some of the country’s most volatile regions.

The visits, he said, would cover operational theatres in the North-East, North-West, and North-Central zones, where security forces continue to conduct intensive operations against terrorists, bandits, and other armed criminal groups.

“We are making efforts to include some social media giants in our troop operations to the North-East, West and Central so as to have a feel of what our troops go through,” the minister stated.

According to him, direct exposure to military operations would help participants better appreciate the complexities of the security situation and the difficult conditions under which troops operate.

Effort to Bridge Information Gap

The proposed initiative comes at a time when public discourse surrounding insecurity has intensified across social media platforms.

Many Nigerians have repeatedly expressed concerns over persistent attacks, kidnappings, killings, and other forms of violence affecting communities in different parts of the country.
