Fear Grips Oyo Community as Student Arrives School With Cutlass After Deadly Terror Attack

Fresh fear has continued to spread across parts of Oyo State after a secondary school student was seen heading to school with a cutlass resting on his shoulder, days after terrorists attacked schools in Oriire Local Government Area and abducted dozens of pupils and teachers.

The disturbing development, captured in a viral video circulating on social media, has become a painful symbol of the growing insecurity troubling communities around Ogbomoso. In the footage, the young student, dressed in his school uniform, walked calmly along the road carrying the weapon while residents nearby carried on with their daily activities.

Many residents who reacted to the clip said it reflects the deep fear now hanging over students and parents in the area, with some believing children no longer feel safe attending school without some form of protection.

The tension follows the deadly attack that occurred on May 15 in the Ahoro-Esinele community near Ogbomoso, where heavily armed terrorists stormed Community High School alongside nearby schools, including Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School.

According to reports, the attackers, who arrived on motorcycles, invaded the schools during academic activities and whisked away several students, teachers, and school officials.

Sources within the community disclosed that about 39 pupils and seven teachers were abducted during the operation, throwing the entire area into panic and confusion.

The tragedy became even more heartbreaking after one of the kidnapped teachers, identified as Michael Oyedokun, a mathematics teacher, was reportedly killed while in captivity.

Residents were left horrified after the terrorists allegedly released a video showing the brutal killing of the teacher, a development that further intensified fear across the affected communities.

Family members of the late teacher later spoke emotionally about the loss, revealing that Oyedokun had been married for over a decade without children. They also lamented that he left behind aging parents who depended on him.

Although schools in the area resumed academic activities shortly after the attack, many parents remain deeply worried about the safety of their children.

Some residents said the emotional trauma caused by the incident has altered daily life in the communities, with fear and uncertainty now dominating conversations among families.

Parents and community leaders have continued to demand stronger security presence around schools and vulnerable rural communities, warning that the repeated attacks could discourage education and expose more children to danger.

While local authorities have acknowledged the security concerns, residents insist that the response so far has not been enough to restore confidence or guarantee safety.

For many people in Oriire and surrounding communities, the image of a schoolboy carrying a cutlass on his way to class now stands as a troubling reminder of the insecurity and fear that have taken root in the area as families continue to await news about the remaining hostages.
