FCT police rescue two abandoned babies, seek help to trace their mothers

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued two abandoned babies in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of Abuja.

The Command disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday by its Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, who said the babies were abandoned at different locations on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Adeh mentioned that in the first incident, a resident of Kurudu, identified as Mr Innocent, reportedly heard the cry of a baby at about 5:30 p.m. around Obodo Street, Kurudu.

According to the police, upon checking the area, the resident discovered a baby boy carefully wrapped in a cloth and abandoned inside a carton box.

Adeh mentioned that police officers from the Kurudu Division, alongside personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care (JWC) Department, were immediately deployed to the scene and rescued the child.

She said the baby was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and was said to be in stable condition. Following the necessary documentation, the child was handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care.

In a separate incident later the same day, at about 9:40 p.m., another resident of Gwagwalada, identified as Mr Ibrahim, heard a baby crying outside his gate.

The police said Ibrahim, assisted by other concerned members of the community, rescued the baby girl and reported the incident at the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15 p.m.

The child was subsequently taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital by personnel of the JWC Department for medical examination and care pending her handover to the Social Welfare Development authorities.

The Command said investigations were ongoing in both cases to determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment and identify the children’s mothers and other family members.

The FCT Police Command therefore appealed to members of the public with information that could assist in identifying the mothers or relatives of either baby to contact the nearest police station.
