Fave laments double standards facing female artists in music industry

Nigerian singer Chidozie Godsfavour Ugochinyere, popularly known as Fave, has lamented over what she describes as the double standards facing female artists in music industry.

Fave, while speaking on the Afropolitan Podcast, claimed that female musicians are often judged not only by their musical ability but also by their physical appearance, clothing and perceived attractiveness.

She further argued that female artists tend to get an attention shift from their music to their bodies and how they are perceived.

“It’s harder for female artists to blow. Female artists aren’t measured by talent but by what they wear. If your tummy isn’t flat… it’s never really about the music; it’s more about people’s sexual desires or their fantasies about you. And I think that right there is a problem, because it becomes more about how decently you are dressed before people listen to you,” she said.

Fave also alleged that male artists do not have to deal with the same level of scrutiny over their appearance.

“But when it comes to men, they aren’t held to that same standard. When it comes to performances, female artists perform better,” she added.
