Elon Musk Regrets Trump Alliance, Says He ‘Got Carried Away’
Elon Musk appears to regret becoming so deeply involved in politics alongside Donald Trump during the president’s second-term administration.
When Trump returned to office, Musk took on a prominent role leading the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), only for the initiative to be scaled back and effectively dissolved just months later.
Since then, the relationship between the two has cooled, with Musk’s criticism of Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” becoming one of the most notable flashpoints in their feud.
In a recent interview with The Economist, Musk reflected on his time leading DOGE, which marked the peak of his political alliance with President Donald Trump following the president’s return to office for a second term.
The tech billionaire admitted that he “got carried away, frankly,” though he did not elaborate further on the remark during the interview.
However, a previous appearance on a December podcast hosted by Katie Miller, the wife of Trump White House adviser Stephen Miller, may offer insight into what Musk meant.
“I think instead of doing DOGE, I would have basically worked on my companies,” he told the host during the sit-down.
Musk Turned Against Trump’s ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’
Musk’s time with DOGE ended in May, and what had only months earlier appeared to be a close alliance between two of the world’s most powerful figures quickly deteriorated into a public feud, with Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” becoming the major point of contention.
In a June interview with CBS, Musk said he was disappointed by the legislation, describing it as a “massive spending” bill rather than the name it had been given.
He also argued that the bill would increase the country’s budget deficit while undermining the work carried out by DOGE.
Further mocking the legislation, Musk joked that a bill could be either “beautiful” or “big,” but not both.
Elon Musk Took His Fight With Trump To X
3As the feud intensified, Musk took his criticism to X, where he shared a series of controversial posts.
In one message, he appeared to suggest that his influence as a major global figure would outlast Trump’s time in office.
“Oh, and some food for thought as they ponder this question: Trump has 3.5 years left as President, but I will be around for 40+ years,” Musk wrote.
The tech mogul also asserted that Trump’s return to the White House was largely due to his own influence while accusing the president of failing to acknowledge his contributions. “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate,” he remarked.

3Amid the feud, Trump claimed Musk’s opposition to his “Big Beautiful Bill” stemmed from planned cuts to electric vehicle subsidies.
“I’m very disappointed with Elon. He knew this bill better than anyone, and he only developed a problem when he found out I would cut the EV mandate,” Trump said at the time.
He went on to suggest that Musk had “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” a term the president has repeatedly used to describe his critics and opponents.
“Elon worked hard at DOGE, and I think he misses the place…I think he got out there and he’s no longer in this beautiful Oval Office…it’s not just Elon, I think when some people leave they miss it so badly they develop a type of TDS…some embrace it, and some become hostile,” the real estate mogul continued.
Elon Musk And Trump Crossed Paths Again At Charlie Kirk Memorial
In the weeks following their public war of words, Musk and Trump appeared to have little interest in repairing their relationship.
However, after the death of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk in September last year, Musk and Trump were seen together again at Kirk’s memorial service.
Trump later spoke about the reunion, saying it was “nice” that Musk came over to greet him.
He also confirmed that the pair had a conversation but did not reveal whether it included any discussion about ending their feud.
