Ekiti governorship poll a key test for APC ahead of 2027, says Uba Sani

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has described the forthcoming Ekiti State governorship election scheduled for 20 June as a decisive political benchmark for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking upon his arrival at Ado-Ekiti Airport on Sunday evening, Sani, who chairs the Ekiti State Governorship Election Campaign Council, stated that the outcome of the poll would serve as a clear indicator of the party’s national strength and public acceptance under President Bola Tinubu.

His visit precedes the official flag-off of the APC governorship campaign for the incumbent governor, Biodun Oyebanji, who is seeking re-election.

The election, which features 13 political parties, is widely regarded as a significant contest that could shape the APC’s political trajectory in the lead-up to 2027.

Sani emphasised that the Ekiti poll would not merely determine leadership within the state but would also reflect the broader national sentiment towards the ruling party’s governance.

Expressing strong confidence in Oyebanji’s chances, Sani asserted that the governor’s performance in office had already secured him widespread public support. He praised Oyebanji’s administration for its focus on people-centred policies, noting visible progress across critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, youth empowerment, and human capital development.

According to Sani, Oyebanji has demonstrated a leadership style characterised by humility, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to development. He argued that these qualities, coupled with tangible achievements, have endeared the governor to the people of Ekiti State, making his re-election highly likely.

“My dear brother, Governor Oyebanji, has done extremely well. In education, infrastructure, and socio-economic empowerment of youths, the results are evident. I have no doubt that the people of Ekiti will support him for continuity, which is crucial for sustained development. This election is merely a formality,” Sani remarked.

Upon his arrival, Sani was received by a delegation led by the Deputy Governor, Mrs Monisade Afuye, before proceeding to the Government House. There, he was welcomed by Oyebanji, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, and members of the Ekiti State Caucus of the National Assembly.

Political observers note that while Sani’s remarks reflect confidence within the APC camp, the presence of multiple parties in the race suggests that the election could still present a competitive challenge.

Nonetheless, the outcome is expected to carry significant implications for national politics as parties begin early positioning for the 2027 general election.
