Ejiofor responds to Nnamdi Kanu’s sack, hints at more revelations

Legal practitioner Ifeanyi Ejiofor has responded to the decision of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to terminate his services as his personal lawyer, saying he remained silent for years despite facing repeated attacks, threats and allegations.

Ejiofor’s reaction follows Kanu’s letter dated July 22, 2026, from the Sokoto Correctional Centre, in which the IPOB leader officially ended the lawyer’s retainership.

In the letter, Kanu also warned Ejiofor against making public comments about him or revealing any confidential information obtained while representing him.

Responding in a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Monday, Ejiofor said he found it surprising that there was now so much concern over his silence when he had consistently chosen not to react to what he described as years of provocation.

According to the lawyer, he endured several attempts to tarnish his image, including alleged blackmail campaigns, petitions filed against him before the appropriate professional authorities and defamatory statements questioning both his integrity and legal practice.

Ejiofor further alleged that while Kanu was in detention, he made threats against him and encouraged some of his supporters to attack his reputation.

Despite these actions, he said he deliberately refused to respond publicly because he was guided by professional ethics and his responsibilities as a legal practitioner.

He maintained that his decision to remain silent should not be mistaken for weakness, insisting that he had always respected the confidential nature of the lawyer client relationship.

“The time has not yet come for me to disclose professionally obtained information. Even if I had intended to do so, I would have done it long before now,” Ejiofor stated.

The former counsel stressed that he has no intention of violating legal ethics or becoming responsible for the consequences of another person’s actions. He said he would continue to conduct himself in line with the rules governing the legal profession.

Ejiofor also declined to directly address what he described as documents that appeared to have been hastily prepared or possibly forged, an apparent reference to Kanu’s letter ending his legal services.

Questioning the motive behind Kanu’s warning on confidentiality, the lawyer asked why there was now a sudden rush to emphasise legal privilege after he had remained silent throughout years of alleged attacks.

He suggested that Kanu’s concerns may have arisen after becoming aware that certain information could be presented in court as part of the defence in an ongoing defamation case involving another party.

According to Ejiofor, his silence over the years has been deliberate and based on his respect for the law, not because he lacked facts or evidence.

He concluded his statement with a warning that “time is fast running out,” adding that although he has chosen not to speak for now, the situation may not remain the same indefinitely.

The latest exchange comes just days after Kanu formally directed Ejiofor to stop representing him, members of his family and the Indigenous People of Biafra in any capacity.

Kanu also warned that any unauthorised disclosure of confidential or privileged information obtained during the course of legal representation could amount to professional misconduct and attract disciplinary action before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC), as well as other legal consequences.

The development marks a fresh twist in the relationship between Kanu and his former lawyer, who worked together for several years during the IPOB leader’s prolonged legal battles.

The public exchange has continued to attract attention, with many closely watching for further reactions from both parties.
