EBOLA: Nigeria on high alert

Nigeria has heightened its preparedness against Ebola Virus Disease following an update on an ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) said the country had been placed on high alert as it strengthens surveillance and response measures against any potential threat.

In an advisory signed by its Director-General, Jide Idris, the agency said all preparatory activities were ongoing and would continue to be reviewed based on the evolving situation.

The NCDC advised travellers arriving from countries with active Ebola transmission to complete the Health Declaration Form as part of enhanced public health monitoring measures.

The agency urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, especially for symptoms associated with Ebola, and to promptly seek medical attention while providing relevant travel or exposure history where necessary.

The advisory followed the NCDC’s Dynamic Risk Assessment and consultations with public health experts and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

The alert comes after the Democratic Republic of Congo reported thousands of confirmed Ebola cases and related deaths.

According to the latest update, the DRC recorded 7,672 confirmed cases, including 3,699 deaths as of September 20, 2026.

The NCDC said it remained committed to protecting Nigerians through surveillance, preparedness and response measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
