The tower was originally named Burj Dubai. However, during the 2008-09 global financial crisis, Dubai faced major economic difficulties. At that time, Abu Dhabi’s ruler and then UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan provided billions of dollars in financial support through the federal government. In recognition of his help, the tower was renamed Burj Khalifa at the time of its inauguration.

Burj Khalifa stands 828 metres tall with 163 floors, making it the tallest building in the world. It officially opened in 2010.
