Donald Trump praises Xi Jinping, calls him ‘great leader’ during high-stakes summit in China, says ‘Whenever we had a problem…’

US President Donald Trump on Thursday praised Chinese President Xi Jinping, calling him “a great leader” as the two met in Beijing for a high-stakes summit. In response, Xi said the two nations should be “partners and not rivals”, setting the tone for crucial talks between the world’s two biggest economies.

The leaders met at the Great Hall of the People, where Xi welcomed Trump with a grand ceremony. Despite the warm optics, the meeting comes at a time of deep tensions over issues such as the Iran war, trade disputes and Taiwan.

Trump expressed strong optimism about future ties, saying the relationship between the United States and China would be “better than ever before”. He told Xi, “We’re going to have a fantastic future together. I have great respect for China and the job you’ve done. You’re a great leader.” He also highlighted their long-standing personal rapport, claiming that both leaders have managed to resolve past disagreements through direct communication.

Why is this US-China meeting so important?

The summit is being closely watched globally as it comes during a period of geopolitical uncertainty. Conflicts like the Iran war and ongoing tensions over Taiwan have increased the stakes, making cooperation between Washington and Beijing more critical than ever.

Can the US and China avoid direct rivalry?

Xi Jinping stressed that cooperation is the only way forward. “A stable China-US relationship is a boon for the world. Cooperation benefits both sides, while confrontation harms both,” he said, adding that both nations must avoid falling into conflict and instead build a new model of major power relations.

What happened during Trump’s grand Beijing welcome?

Trump was given a ceremonial reception at the Great Hall of the People, complete with national anthems and cannon fire. Schoolchildren waved flags and welcomed the US delegation. Trump also met top Chinese officials and is expected to attend a state banquet.
